Snow
Snow removal is getting old by this time of year. I know I am pretty tired of looking at the stuff. But, for many areas in the US, especially in the north east, where the snow is wet and heavy, removal of snow from your roof can be critical to preventing damage. This in not something you should tackle alone, however. There are plenty of experience professionals who will do this for you. Would you rather pay $200 to get your roof cleared, or $4000 to have it repaired? Avoid costly repairs by maintaining your home well in these wintery months. Here are some other tips: Do not pile snow against your foundation! Early meltdowns before the ground thaws could mean leaky basements because the melting snow and ice cannot penetrate the frozen ground. Shovel snow away from the house. Plan ahead... you never know if there will be sufficient melting times between storms.. throw the snow so that your banks don't pile up too high close to the area you are trying to keep clear. Otherwise, you'll end up with 10' high snow banks that you cannot possibly throw more snow over the top of!! Keep snow and ice from building up on overhangs and doorway roofs ... during a meltdown, this could inadvertently slide off and hurt someone, especially if closing the door behind you as you exit the home triggers the slide! If the design of your home is poor, allowing snow buildup in dangerous areas, consider a roof remodel once spring arrives. An experienced contractor can advise and help you reconstruct your roof to eliminate these safety problems as well as constant problems with leaking and ice dam buildup every year. Do not put ice melt on your roof!! The salts will break down the roofing material, and you will be sorry. New materials in roofing are the wave of the future too, consider metal or plastic roofing. There are new plastic roofing materials made to look like traditional asphalt shingles, but will last much longer and stand up to the weather fluctuations, and are "greener" for the environment. Snow slides off of these nicely, and it last for years.
